We talk a lot about preparedness at Red Road Resilience Network—storms, supplies, communication, and response capacity. But some of our most important resilience work happens when the skies are blue.
Resilience comes from connection.
It comes from knowing our neighbors. Caring about one another. Knowing who has skills to share, who might need a hand, and who will show up when something happens.
Art gatherings, music, community meals, skill shares, and celebrations may not look like disaster preparedness. But they create the relationships that make a community better able to respond and recover when life gets disrupted.
That’s why we’re so excited to support opportunities that celebrate the artists, stories, and creativity already living throughout our community.

The first Red Road Art Tour—November 21, 2026
Opening doors to the artists, makers, and creative spaces tucked all along our beautiful Red Road. It’s a day to explore, discover local talent, meet our neighbors, and celebrate the incredible creativity growing right here in Puna Makai.
We gather when there isn’t an emergency so we know each other when there is one.
We share food. We make art. We learn from one another. We discover the incredible capacities already here.
And then, when the power goes out, a tree blocks the road, or a neighbor needs help, we aren’t starting from strangers.
On blue-sky days, we build capacity.
In storms, we test that capacity.
In recovery, we rise stronger.
Preparedness matters. Supplies matter. Plans matter.
And connection is what brings all of it to life.
That’s why art, food, creativity, and gathering belong right at the heart of community resilience.
These gatherings are part of our Red Road Resilience Outreach Project: Connecting Community & Building Capacity, funded through the County of Hawaiʻi Kīlauea Disaster Recovery Grant Program, with support from Vibrant Hawaiʻi and fiscal sponsorship by Pōhaku Pelemaka.
